THE AFR’OSCARS !
Posted by By AfroTeam
While at the request of Jada Pinkett, the next Oscar ceremony would be on the verge of being boycotted by some minority artists. Blacks, in this second category of voters, would be represented at only 2%, a few tenths of a point more than their counterparts from the Hispanic community, even more disadvantaged, and we’re not even talking about the Asian community.
As a result, the director Spike Lee as well as some artists, decided to boycott this famous Oscar ceremony. Even if the companies defend themselves by arguing on the fact that the WHITE and OLD producers find that a black actor is not enough salesman, except for some particular cases like, Will Smith or Denzel Washington. Then you have to take into account the quality of the film, the opportunity to be placed in the first or second role and the performance of the actor. Because it would be really difficult to give an Oscar to Will Smith for his performance in the film After Earth. After that, it is true that we can still wonder why Samuel L. Jackson has not received anything for his quality as an actor?
Even if this is a little less the case in the United States than in France, artists from visible minorities or not, are likely to be assigned to stereotypes: such as for the Black man the role of a servant, a dealer, a thief, or a slave; the Mexican the role of a drug trafficker, ditto for France, you just have to replace the Mexican by the North African who also has the international label of a terrorist.
If the African American film industry is running at full speed on the production side. One can only observe that the films have lost a lot of their value. The scripts are very light, very similar to each other, and by replacing actors with personalities, only to increase visibility, has only increased the poor quality of the films. Whether it is for Spike Lee or Tyler Perry their energy of beginning of career, it is unfortunately out of breath! But the next generation is already here, whether it is for Ryan Coogler, Rick Famuyiwa or F Gary Gray.
However the Buzz is done, since Chris Rock confirms his presence as head of ceremony. And for the most erudite of you, you know that Chris Rock does not have his tongue in his mouth and that the Neg’Marron of Hollywood risks strongly to electrify the evening of this next February 28th.
Afro-Style decided for this occasion to make a small review of all these African-American actors awarded since the creation of the Oscars.
