Sohn was born in Newport News, Virginia. Her father, an African-American soldier in the U.S. Army, met her Korean mother while stationed in South Korea after the Korean War. After the birth of her older brother, her mother decided to move to the United States where a child of African-American and Asian descent would experience less discrimination than in Korea. Sohn's childhood was difficult: She was mocked a lot because of her origins. Her schizophrenic father beat her mother; her brother was killed when she was a teenager. She struggles during her adolescence and beyond with a cocaine addiction.
