Adepero Oduye was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Nigerian parents with seven children. Although she graduated from Cornell University with a pre-med degree, she decided to pursue her passion for acting upon graduation.
She made that debut in 2011 in Dee Rees' film "Pariah," for which she received several awards and a nomination for Best Leading Actress. In 2013, Oduye starred alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor in Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave. In 2014, she made her directorial debut with Breaking In, a short film based on her brother's experience that tells the story of a young man who is stopped and frisked by the New York City police.
