John David Washington es hijo del actor Denzel Washington y de la actriz y cantante Pauletta Washington. Ganó una beca de fútbol para el Colegio Morehouse, clase de 2006. Luego jugó para la NFL Europa, en el equipo Sea Devils de Hamburgo (Alemania) durante la temporada 2007 como Running Back. A partir de 2015, desempeña uno de los papeles principales en la serie de televisión Ballers, emitida por HBO. Luego pasó a interpretar varios papeles, incluyendo en Love Beats Rhymes del rapero RZA. En 2018, protagoniza el papel principal de BlacKkKlansman: Me he infiltrado en el Ku Klux Klan de Spike Lee, presentado en competición en el Festival de Cannes de 2018 y que lo revelará al público en general.
